1. Dr. Martin Luther King was viewed as the leader of the Civil Rights Movement and his assassination was a tragic one. He believed in peaceful protest and his assassination led to everything but peacefulness. His death caused riots and violence which is everything he didn’t want. Had he not been assassinated the riots and violence wouldn’t have happened at all. I believe that he could’ve and would’ve pushed the Civil Rights Movement along in a non-violent way, and though it wouldn’t have been easy he could’ve seen his efforts pay off. He was what the movement needed and even though things worked out eventually it’s a shame his life was ended in this terrible way.
2. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the voice of non violent protests. He was an activist and leading spokesperson for the Civil Rights Movement. A consequence to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination was the crumbling of the movement in 1968. Additionally, racial violence began to erupt, overtaking the non-violent message that was carried by King.
I do not believe these events would have taken place if King had not been assassinated. The movement that was being carried by King had momentum and was creating “political consensus behind the idea of comprehensive reforms to address the root causes of racial discrimination and African-American poverty.” Although there were more militant leaders as part of the civil rights movement prior to Kings assassination, fear that the non-violent message may not be carried by another strong leader led to the eruption of violence and crumbling of the movement.
