You will see from the Directions for this Assignment that the basis for this assignment is “contextualizing,” or researching the meaning, of one PRIMARY SOURCE. “Primary” means first, so this is a first-hand source that was created in the past by someone who was living at that time. It’s something like a newspaper article, speech, letter, or something else that was created back in the day that your topic took place.
Find a primary source on the internet or in a book about your topic.
– It cannot be a quote or just a few sentences. It needs to be a full source – like the full speech or letter – that was created back in the period when your topic took place.
– For example: Abolitionist Sarah Grimke came to believe women, like the slaves, needed more freedom and wrote a public letter about that in 1838. It is a primary source for 1838 and was one of the first calls for women’s rights in the U.S.
– ANOTHER EXAMPLE: if your topic is the Civil War, you need to decide what, specifically, interests you about the war. Then find a speech, letter, or news report about it. These things can be found online, and the page in this module teaches you how to do that.
