Every day, the media (including social media and other internet sources) influence public opinion by injecting bias in its reporting. Many people listen to only one source to be informed of a particular event, issue, or person. There are dangers in this. You need to get in a habit of cross-referencing sources to get the “big picture.” Hopefully this assignment will guide you in this effort.

How to Identify Bias

– Bias through selection and omission (what they choose to cover).

– Bias through placement (which stories are first).

– Bias by word choice and tone.

– The use of words with a positive or negative connotation can strongly influence the reader or viewer: consider how a hockey game might be seen differently if it’s described as a “loss,” a “close game” or a “near win.”

– To detect bias, always consider where the news item “comes from.”
