By now in this course we have learned that cultural values, norms, attitudes and perceptions can all have an effect on behaviors. By now we should also realize that cross-cultural factors can also affect mental health. The assigned course readings discuss the connections between culture, personality and mental health issues. Perhaps many of you will become counselors or psychologists or social workers or nurses who must deal with mental health and psychological issues in persons with varying cultural backgrounds, For earned participation credit in this final two-week conference, you must answer the following questions.
Imagine that you are a high school counselor in a school with a culturally diverse student body.

The teacher is convinced that this student is highly intelligent and wants you to encourage him to continue his studies and go on to college. But he tells you that he is under family pressure to drop out and get a job to support his family. You suspect that his family is undocumented and entered the US illegally. What problems might you encounter in counseling this young man? What would you do?
2. A young female immigrant student from rural Pakistan confides to you that she is under great pressure from her family to return to their home country for an arranged marriage to a much older man to ensure the family’s financial success. Solution
As a high school counselor in a culturally diverse school, there are several potential problems that could arise when providing counseling to the students described in the scenario.
In the case of the male student from a poor immigrant working class family, the counselor may encounter several challenges. The student may be facing pressure from his family to drop out of school and get a job to support them, which could conflict with his desire to continue his education and go to college. Additionally, the counselor may be aware that the student’s family is undocumented and entered the US illegally, which could create legal and ethical concerns for the counselor.
In the case of the female student from rural Pakistan, the counselor may encounter similar challenges. The student may be facing pressure from her family to return to their home country for an arranged marriage, which could conflict with her desire to remain in the US and continue her education. Additionally, the counselor may need to take into account the cultural norms and values of the student’s family, which may be different from those of the school and the broader community.
In both cases, the counselor may need to work closely with the students and their families to address these challenges and find solutions that support the students’ goals and interests. This could involve providing guidance and support to the students as they navigate their cultural and family obligations, as well as advocating on their behalf with their families and other relevant parties. The counselor may also need to consider the legal and ethical implications of their actions, and take care to protect the students’ rights and privacy.
