For the research paper, you are to chose a notable jazz musician from either the past or present, and study his/her life, art, and impact on society/culture. The paper is built in three installments which will be turned in on three separate dates. A quality research paper must also have a thesis (organizing argument) stating a proposition. The paper should begin with an introduction describing the person you chose, why you chose him/her, and stating your specific thesis. The middle of the paper will consist of background research on the music and culture pertaining to your chosen individual. The paper should end with a conclusion that revisits the original thesis, highlights what you learned through your research about the person you chose, and how the experience has impacted or altered your views about jazz, culture, and the world around you.

The research paper will be submitted in three installments. submit each installment as a separate document

• Installment #1 (20 points): Students will submit the introduction of the paper (title, topic and the person related to your topic, why you chose this person and topic, and your thesis in bold print). This introduction may be anywhere from a few sentences to two pages in length, as long as the above requirements are met. Failure to submit an acceptable thesis (1st installment).
• Installment #2 (30 points): Students will submit the background research/citation showing high-quality, relevant research sources and knowledge of proper citation procedures. • Conclusion

In this final installment is your paper, you should elaborate on your second installment which has some quotes and analysis already. If you follow that format, and continue to elaborate, you will naturally build the body of your paper.

In a nutshell, your paper as a whole should be a study of your choice musicians life, and their relevance to, and impact on the music world. Any parallels you can make that point to connections to any social issues, especially those we are still struggling with, would be definitely important to point out.

The conclusion should be mostly in your own words, and it should revisit the original thesis, highlight what you learned as a result of your research and interview, and describe in detail how the experience has affected your opinions or views of jazz and how it relates to the world around you.

By university standards, this paper is supposed to be a minimum of 2,500 words minimum (not counting the bibliography), in a common 12-point font. Content is the most important!
