Animal experimentation also referred to as animal testing is a process that involves using non-human animals in certain experimental tests (Baird, 7). Although some of it only involves study of behavioral actions through observation, the most disturbing is the use of animals as testing objects in laboratories. They are subjected to physical torture and after the respective researchers have found the answer they were looking for they kill the animals and find others. This issue has aroused debates in the United States and other countries all over the world against animal experimentation. The question between continued success in various fields of research and morality remains unanswered as researchers and activists battle against each other.
It is clear that over the years in ancient era, animal experimentation has been a major success contributing to human benefits. It has contributed to education of university students and in conduction of various research programs on diseases threatening the existence of animals. In addition, biology students in colleges and universities need to undertake practical projects through these experiments so that they gain the needed knowledge to treat the animals in future. It has also played a role in the most recent and greatest breakthroughs of all time both to animals and human beings (Day, 79). For instance, through animal testing, scientists and doctors have managed to make discoveries in scientific and medicine fields respectively. This way more diseases can be cured with more ease reducing the overall number of human and animal deaths globally. Following to these, they pose an argument against the elimination of animal experimentation as this will facade a risk to animals as it will not be as easy to determine cures to animal killer diseases (Hayhurst, 123). With the firm stand that these experiments mean more good than harm to the animals, the scientists remain unmoved.
However, activists claim that there are more than a few aspects hidden behind all these successes of animal experimentation. Animals specifically suffer serious harm following to the tests conducted on them in. Throughout history, people have had the tendency to remain ignorant on the nature of animal lives and this has become evident in this day and age because even though most people understand the experimental procedure they choose not to care. This is the main reason causing the uproar of activists who are claiming that there is no reason good enough to subject animals to torture with intent to satisfy human needs. For example, animals like rabbits, rats and primates are locked up in cold and barren cages in American laboratories awaiting experimentation (Monamy, 123). With the number of animal experimentations increasing to 40% compared to the previous year, activists uphold their debate of banning these experimentations. Liberation movements are in the rise as well supporting the banning of animal experimentation not only because it is an unethical abuse of animals but also because it triggers certain behavioral reactions and changes to the subject animals in future.
This is becoming a major issue mainly in the United States of America as activists fight to free the animals from subjection to these experimental procedures and scientists claiming that this will cause a major lagging in the scientific field. It is therefore left upon the judges and the government at large to make a wise decision that not only favors scientific development but also animal welfare.
