For the writing assignment you can choose one of two topics:

1) Select one theory that you think best able to explain juvenile

delinquency. Begin first by discussing the core tenets of the theory

(i.e., what are the assumptions, the constructs and the propositions).

Then provide support for why you think this theory is best able to

explain crime among juveniles. This might include a discussion on the

correlates of crime, and likely why crime is high in adolescence and

declines in young adulthood. Be sure to support your points with logical

arguments and literature.

2) Trace the history of juvenile delinquency and justice over time.

Beginning with how definitions and roles of “childhood” and

“adolescence” have changed, and what major events led to the

development of the juvenile justice system. Then discuss the key events

and cases that have led to the pendulum of juvenile justice to swing

from being punitive to rehabilitative. Finally, discuss where you think

the juvenile justice system will go in the future. Be sure to support

for points with logical arguments and literature.

Format

Your paper should be eight to ten pages in length, double spaced, use

Times New Roman font, size 12 point, with one-inch margins. I also ask

that you write this assignment as if it is a formal paper. This means

that your paper should have, at minimum, an introduction, a main body,

and a conclusion. This also means that you need to spell correctly and

pay attention to grammar. If you cite or paraphrase any work or ideas

that are not your own CITE and include a reference section, and general

formatting should follow regular academic standards (e.g., APA, MLA or

ASA formats). If you find yourself wondering about any of these issues
