Charles Allens book is collection of stories from Europeans who migrated to the Asian region, fell in love with the place and finally called it homes. Allen has specifically told stories of Europeans who went to Asia in 20th century, the period that many countries in the region were under colonial rule; the nations were also engaged in independence war, most of which earned it in mid twentieth century. The stories seem to have common phases that started by arriving in Asia at a period that respective home countries were controlling individual countries in the regions. The second phase involved living in tensions during the fight for independence in individual Asian nations. Most of the Europeans attachment to the place and investments made forced them to stay despite personal safety issues given the local peoples displeasure over occupation. The thirds phase started immediately after independence, when many Europeans decided top stay over. Agreements with newly independent Asian nations resulted to friendly political relations that aided peaceful coexistence between Europeans and Asians. Some who had gone to Asia for adventure eventually ended up becoming bona fide citizens. This review will look into Allens portray of the three phases of Europeans lives in Asia.
