Mise-en-scene basically uses visual features in creating the intended meaning to be perceived by the viewer or audience. The visual designs of the film or theatrical piece, involved throughout the entire stretch or in some particular scenes, reinforce the themes explored by the films and plays. The film, “the bicycle thief” by Vittorio De Sica, vividly tells the story of Antonio Ricci, who is unemployed within the post-war economy in the Italian city of Rome.  Through out the film, Antonio is seen as a poor man, desperate to make ends meet for his family. We see him frantically searching for a job and he is given the condition of owning a bicycle in order to get the job of pasting posters. As the man of the house he has to provide for his family. Poverty is among the central theme of the movie, together with the alienation of some economic classes within the society, the child and father relationship and religion. The director greatly applies mise-en-scene in revealing the themes to his viewers.
