Transition into Adulthood
The transition into adulthood may differ depending on cultural traditions and rites of passage from adolescence to adulthood. The transition into adulthood is also a time for relationships and romance from a normative perspective.
Solution:
The transition into adulthood is a significant milestone in a person’s life. It is a time when young people leave behind the innocence and relative carefree existence of childhood and begin to take on more responsibilities and independence. This transition may be marked by various cultural and ethnic traditions and rites of passage, which are intended to symbolize and celebrate the individual’s passage into adulthood.
Two examples of unique rites of passage to adulthood on the basis of ethnic or cultural variations are the coming of age ceremonies of the Maasai people of East Africa, and the vision quests of Native American tribes.
The Maasai people have a tradition of holding a coming of age ceremony for young men, known as the Emuratta. This ceremony involves the young man undergoing a series of physical challenges and tests, such as running long distances and facing off against a lion. Upon successful completion of these tests, the young man is considered to be a full-fledged adult and is given the title of Moran, meaning “warrior.”
In Native American culture, young people often undertake a vision quest in order to gain spiritual guidance and direction as they transition into adulthood. This involves the individual going on a solo journey into the wilderness, where they will fast, pray, and seek guidance from spiritual beings. Upon returning, the individual shares their vision with the community, and this is seen as a significant step in their journey into adulthood.
Pluralism is the concept that society is made up of many different groups and cultures, each with their own unique traditions and customs.
