Evaluation in Supervision

Evaluation in supervision may create anxiety in the supervisor, supervisee, or both. There are many strategies for reducing anxiety related to evaluating a supervisee. Supervisors must establish clear goals from the start. Engaging the supervisee in the process by having the supervisee simultaneously conduct a self-evaluation is also helpful.

The supervisor and supervisee can establish a supervision schedule and identify specific dates and times for evaluation. During evaluations, supervisors need to focus on behavior rather than personality when providing feedback to supervisees. Focusing on what can be changed and providing specific ideas for professional improvement will motivate supervisees and will be the most productive approach.

This week, you prepare for the in-residence component of this course. In previous weeks, you have read a variety of resources on supervision and evaluation in supervision. As you reflect on the readings, consider which topics generate strong opinions in you or spark your interest to learn more. Why do those resources elicit such a response?

For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources. Select two topics from the readings about which you have strong opinions or an interest in learning more.

Post by Day 4 a brief description of at least two topics from the readings on evaluation in supervision about which you have strong opinions and/or strong interest in learning more during the in-residence component, and explain why.
