for four reflection,

1. Each post MUST BE three or more sentences. This includes your posts in response to other student posts.

2. Each post must be detailed. It is not enough to simply write, “I agree with you” or “I like your idea.” You must say WHY you agree or like someone’s ideas.

3. Write in complete, standard English sentences. Do not “text.” Poorly written posts will not be considered for a grade.

4. If you disagree with someone’s post, politely do so. Explain why you disagree with facts and details.

5. If you agree with someone, build on the ideas.

6. You can reply to someone who had replied to your original post; this will count as another of your required postings for the assignment.

7. Be kind, respectful, and curious toward other students.

8. The instructor reserves the right to delete any post that is offensive, intolerant, or not sufficiently academic for a college-level course.

The forums are PUBLIC and the instructor reads every single post made.

SUBSCRIPTIONS are optional. If you do not want to receive a copy of every post made, you must opt out of the forum subscription individually.

1.from Tran Quang Ngoc Nguyen

“I am reading the book “Inside Out & Back Again” by Thanhha Lai, a story about a young Vietnamese girl who moves to America after the fall of Saigon. The book is written in an interesting way called verse, and the words remind me of poetry with less punctuation and sentence structures. I chose this book because of its Vietnamese background. As an immigrant from Vietnam myself, I can relate to the main character Ha as she travels from her home country, where she knows everything and is smart, to a brand-new foreign country where she cannot even speak the language at first and feels stupid. Her descriptions of the sounds of the neighborhood she grew up in and the tastes of the fresh papayas remind me of my childhood home in Dong Nai. I also enjoy the poem structure of the book as it is the first time I read a story where a single word can mean so much like when the word “stupid” is the last word on the page. I think the book really describes the feelings of Ha, from her sadness at leaving her home to her frustration at learning English. I have also felt the same way when I learned English and thought some grammar was hard to remember. I expect to read more about how Ha begins to live in Alabama and how she deals with the bullies at school. I hope she can find some happiness in her new home and make the best of it just like her mother advises. Even if our journeys to America is not the same, we both experienced similar struggles and immigrated for better opportunities. I want to see how she overcomes her initial struggles and make use of her lessons in my own life.”

“Hi Tran,

Thanks for sharing your reflection on “ Inside Out & Back Again.” Because of your clear introduction and analysis, I have a solid understanding before reading this novel on my own. As an international student, the experience of the Vietnamese girl resonates with me. Last year, I left my hometown- Taiwan and came to the States without my family for college. During the first month, I had a hard time adapting to a new environment and dealing with school works. Everything was unfamiliar, and I feel stressed and frustrated. Fortunately, things have changed after I made some great friends at De Anza. Precisely because of them, I have the strength to continue studying in America, and I have adequate courage to overcome all struggles and obstacles in my life. The lesson that’s I learn from my experience is that life is not that hard because our family and friends always have our back. From your response, I could tell that the Vietnamese girl is also on the journey to adapt to the new environment, and her similar situation appeals to me to know what happens with her in the future.”

2. from Yu Tsen Lin “When I was briefly looking over the reading list, a book called Big Magic caught my attention. I decided to read this novel first since I read Gilbert’s other novel called Eat, Pray, Love before, and there’s a short story between me and Big Magic. With the experience of reading her other novels, Gilbert’s writing style, thoughts, and the content of the novel left a deep impression on me. Therefore, I expect Big Magic is as wonderful as her previous novels. Honestly, this is not my first time reading Big Magic. Throwback to 2018, my English teacher gave me this novel as a graduation gift. During that summer, I had started to read the first couple of pages, yet I haven’t finished reading it because of some reason. Thanks to this assignment, I have an opportunity to continue reading the rest of Big Magic. For me, Big Magic is a magical novel because my concerns and worries could be solved by reading it. For example, there’s a phrase that says, “You can measure your worth by your dedication to your path, but not by your success or failure.” (41) It makes me realize that there are many ups and downs in our life, and perhaps the result is not as same as we expect, but it doesn’t matter as long as we fully dedicated ourselves to what we do. Basically, the foundation of the book is about being creative in our life. Instead of specifically referring to the art field, Gilbert means being creative in every field and our daily life. She urges the readers to act and think creatively so that we can find the solutions to the problems more easily. Besides, the message advocates for is how she reiterates that if you have passion in your work then you should fully engage in, even if the obstacles block your path to the final destination. Just as I expect, reading Big Magic indeed not only brings me positive energy and sparks my inspiration. In addition, Gilbert’s words remind me to reflect on my creative journey, stay hungry, and dedicated to everything. Infusing my everyday lives with more passion and creativity. I expect to learn how to unleash my creativity bravely and explore the purpose and experience of our existence after reading Big Magic.”

3. from Sandeep Chahal

“The first book I have selected from the reading list is Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue. At first, it took me quite a while to decide which book I liked the best, but I eventually happened to pick this one. I wanted to select a book that stood out to me, and that’s what I went for. When I searched for this book online, I came across many good reviews. Many people are recommending this book, saying that it’s one that you should definitely read and not miss out on. Therefore, I finally came to the conclusion to read it and give it a try. Growing up, I never had an interest in reading books, so this was quite a challenge for me until I actually picked up the book and started reading it. As I put my mind to this book, I’ve realized that it’s not that bad at all and that instead I enjoy it. Since I began reading this book, I have realized the reviews were right about this novel because it’s one you can’t let go of. Reading a few chapters, made me very interested to see what the rest of the novel holds. Also I noticed, many people could relate to the stories that are told. This novel is about a young couple and their six-year-old son who migrate to America from a city called Limbe in Cameroon. They migrate, hoping to create a better life for their son Liomi. Coming as immigrants they face many struggles due to the fact that they have to adjust to this whole different lifestyle and search for new jobs. This story is something I look forward to reading about. I am now very excited to finish this novel because I can’t wait to see the end and reflect afterwards.”

4. from Ping Hsuan Wang

“My intention of choosing The Best We Could Do, written by Thi Bui, is because it is a graphic memoir. I consider images to create a more concrete scene that delivers the author’s thoughts more straightforward. The story begins with Bui giving birth to a child in 2015, in which her mom was unable to watch her daughter in pain due to her past memories. Bui’s mom later shared her story about her experience of giving birth to six children without her husband aside, which shows how tradition has changed over time. Bui rewinds her parents’ life in both the united states and Vietnam. The different lifestyles and cultures shaped in two countries imprinted in Bui’s heart and reshape her thoughts. In chapter two, Bui’s childhood memories about her sister, Bích, leaving with her boyfriend shows a traditional Vietnamese family’s rigidity and formal living style. As Bui ages, a conflict of whether she should sacrifice her career and take care of her parents to meet traditional Vietnamese family expectations or leave them alone in American way. I’ve read through five chapters so far. I love the way that the author is using personal experience to demonstrate the difference between two cultures that shaped her family. Graphics in the comics also make the expression of each character visible and vivid. I excited to see how Bui’s thoughts develop over time and how stories from her parents bring influence to her life.”
