From your readings this week you may come to the conclusion that primary care is being besieged from many sides: a) patient consumerism, b) value based compensation and c) new competitors in the form of retail care, telehealth and home based care. You can also apply the Five Forces Porter Model to analyze the current state of market for primary care. (To refresh your past learning, a summary of this model can be found on https://www.isc.hbs.edu/strategy/business-strategy/Pages/the-five-forces.aspx (Links to an external site.)).
In this forum draw on all your assigned readings and synthesize your learning through the application of Porter’s five framework to analyze the state of the market for primary care services. The five forces are:
Power of the buyer/consumer (patient centered care, health consumerism, social media recommendations, etc.)
Power of the suppliers (health care insurance markets, health policy related incentives for value based care).
New entrants (competitive pressures from new primary care delivery models).
Existing competitive pressures
Threat of substitutes for primary care services.
