You will write about a specific podcast, television series, book, movie, play, etc. that you think illustrates something interesting about a particular idea or theme. You will use specific evidence from your primary source (in other words, the TV show, movie, etc. you chose as your topic) to argue a specific point or thesis about your topic (which is up to you… as a writer, you will need to decide what your argument will be). In a 3-4 page essay, explore how your specific topic (the movie, TV show, etc.) has contributed something significant. In other words, why is this interesting, different, or worthy of analysis?

Be sure to demonstrate some awareness of genre as well. For example, if your topic is a rom-com, you should demonstrate that you know a little bit about the history of rom-coms and the conventions or expectations of that genre. Think about and explain the ways your topic adheres to or breaks from the audience’s expectations of the genre.

Start by brainstorming the traditional genre characteristics you might expect from your chosen title. While watching, reading, or listening to your title, annotate by looking for specific passages, scenes, quotes, etc. that help illustrate your argument about what makes this topic interesting.

Assignment Specifics
Length: 3-4 pages, not including a works cited page. Use MLA format for page setup and citations.

Sources: You should quote from and cite one primary source (a specific book, episode/s of a TV series, film, etc… your chosen topic). Do not incorporate any secondary sources in this essay. I’m only interested in your take on this topic right now.
