This week, Chapter 18 discussed the evolution of nursing science. Starting with logical positivism, which believes knowledge comes from observable, measurable, and verifiable information usually moving in a linear, logical path. Carper’s work on the four ways of knowing in nursing is also presented as the other parts of nursing knowledge. Postmodernism is an experiential approach and we see the words used in qualitative research: hermeneutics, narrative traditions, critical social theory and feminism. This discussion board will consider Carper’s patterns of knowing including: empirics, esthetics, personal knowledge and ethics.

Your beliefs about nursing will have an impact on your DNP advanced practice so it is important to reflect on your ideals.
1. Carper presents these four ways of knowing as important in our nursing practice. Do you agree all are needed or is one more important than the others in your future DNP practice? Explain.
2. Which of Carper’s Ways of Knowing fits your philosophy of nursing for your future position as a DNP in your specialty? Be sure to consider the aspects the author discusses so you are using Carper’s ideas instead of simple meanings for those words. Include the paradigm concepts of nursing, person, health, and environment in your response.
3. Reflect on and discuss whether you have changed your practice over time. Did you start out in one pattern and develop into another? Did different jobs you held impact the way of knowing you used? What ways of knowing do you observe in other nurses you work with?
