WL – 3 Discussion questions

1.) We’re going to take a closer look at the dictatorships that rocked the countries of the Southern Cone during the 1970s and early 1980s. Everyone should visit the Vanished Gallery (Google: Vanished Gallery) and look at the discussion of the Argentinean Dirty War (“Victims,” “Responsible” etc.) and the “Disappeared.” Then, I would like some good reports by you all on the following topics: The reports should be 200-300 words long and NOT copy directly from a website. Use multiple sources, list your sources, and do not copy and paste word-for-word. I will visit the websites from which you received your info.
Ezra and Dillan: Argentina: The 1976 Military Coup and its Victims.
Elisabeth: Argentina, the Mothers and Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo Osvaldo: Argentina and the Truth Commissions(s)
Alissa and Sergio: Chile: The 1973 Coup, what led to it (1970-1973), and its victims.
Raul: Salvador Allende and his Death
Jay: Operation Condor and US State Dept. Documents revealing US involvement 2.) Both “The Journey of the Watermelon” and “A Note to Paula” present fictional situations based on general historical truths. These exact things may not have happened to these exact people, but there is a brotherhood of people that experienced what these characters have experienced. How are the stories based on reality, and what fictitious elements help to make the stories more powerful? Finally, what is your interpretation of the ending of “A Note to Paula?” (200-300 words long) 3.) How do “The Bicycles” and “The Censors” create absurd situations in order to make a comment on society, and on society under the control of military rule, to be more specific? Is the simplicity of “The Bicycles” effective and symbolic or too abstract to be communicative? With “The Censors,” rather than saying that Juan is just stupid, let’s think about the hypothetical situation that Valenzuela has set up and on what element of human nature she is commenting.(200-300 words long) Requirements: 600/900 words all together
